New IEEE Presentation Series on Nuclear Energy
Online presentation series debuts on March 12th, 2025
NOTE: This news item was updated after original publication, to reflect the modified name of the presentation series.
The IEEE Vancouver Section (Joint Applied Physics Chapter), in collaboration with the IEEE Future Directions Committee, is creating a series of online presentations on topics related to nuclear energy.
The IEEE Presentation Series on Nuclear Energy is intended for a broad audience, not only the engineering community.
This presentation series will be of interest to the engineering community, energy providers, governments and regulators, nuclear reactor manufacturers, and other design engineering firms seeking to develop applications for these new energy sources.
The presentations will also be of interest to the general community, especially those with an interest in energy alternatives, industries with increasing energy needs, energy providers, regulators and policy makers.
Members of the technical community and the public at large will learn about the characteristics of the new emerging nuclear technologies from experts in the nuclear and energy domains.
The IEEE Vancouver Section and IEEE Future Directions Committee, in creating this series, help serve the needs of the profession and the public in general by increasing awareness and understanding of nuclear technologies.
To address climate change and mitigate the growing energy supply crisis, the world is increasingly turning to nuclear energy as a key solution. The IEEE is committed to informing as many people as possible about the nature of nuclear energy — including discussions on technology, safety, reliability, and environmental impact – and addressing the widespread misconceptions and misinformation that have persisted for decades.
The series, consisting of nine talks and a film screening, will explore various critical aspects of nuclear energy. Each session will feature renowned experts and respected scholars in the field, providing valuable insights into the role of nuclear power in our energy future.
Included in the presentation series will be a special showing of the documentary film “Nuclear Now”, directed by Oliver Stone.
The first few presentations in the series will be:
March 12, 2025 Introduction to the Nuclear Presentation Series (Dr. Ahmed Hussein)
March 26, 2025 Special Presentation: “Nuclear Now” documentary (film: Nuclear Now)
April 9, 2025 Planning Future Energy Systems: Do we go nuclear? (Dr. Taco Niet)
