Online presentation series debuts on March 12th, 2025

                    

The IEEE Vancouver Section (Joint Applied Physics Chapter),  in collaboration with the IEEE Future Directions Committee, is creating a series of online presentations on topics related to nuclear energy, new nuclear technologies, and specifically, Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).

The IEEE Presentation Series on Nuclear Energy and Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) is intended for a broad audience, not only the engineering community.  These presentations will be of interest to the general community, especially those with an interest in energy alternatives, industries with increasing energy needs, energy providers, regulators and policy makers.  The IEEE, in creating this series, serves the needs of the profession and the public in general by increasing awareness and understanding of nuclear technologies.

The presentations are intended to cover a range of topics related to nuclear energy and nuclear technologies, including:

• comparison of nuclear energy technologies to other clean energy technologies
• characteristics of new nuclear reactor designs, including Small Modular Reactors (SMRs)
• energy capacity (current, forecast, and shortfall)
• fuel sources and supply chain
• waste and environmental impact
• current technical standards and regulatory status
• current investments by energy providers,
• progress and status of current pilot projects and upcoming projects / plans
• special applications of Small Modular Reactors

The presentations in the series will be delivered by experts in the field, and the discussions are intended to be open, objective, and non – biased.

Also included in the presentation series will be a special showing of the documentary film “Nuclear Now”, directed by Oliver Stone.

The first few presentations in the series will be:

March 12, 2025 Introduction to the Nuclear Presentation Series (Dr. Ahmed Hussein)
March 26, 2025 Special Presentation: “Nuclear Now” documentary (film: Nuclear Now)
April 9, 2025 Planning Future Energy Systems: Do we go nuclear? (Dr. Taco Niet)
