ErrataThe ITS Technology Innovation Forum 2023 on March 28/29 was incorrectly stated as organized by the Joint Communications Chapter. It should have stated the organizer as the Joint Transportation Chapter (VT-06/ITS-38). The Distinguished Lecture – Dual Particle (Neutron and Gamma) Imaging on March 8, was incorrectly stated as located at SFU Harbour Centre. It should have stated the event is online only with a link available at the Vtools announcement. The corrected announcements follow below. |

AGM Keynote Speaker Announced!The Vancouver Section is pleased to announce the Keynote Speaker of the AGM & Gala 2023, scheduled for March 25th, 2023. Mr. Shivam Kishore, P.Eng, PMP will discuss “How technology is helping achieve sustainability goals”. Shivam Kishore enables systems-level transformations by intersecting strategy, innovation, and sustainability. He leads the development and execution of sustainability-driven digital and transformation strategies for global stakeholders within the financial sector, technology ecosystem, government and academia. |
The Student Poster Competition deadline is Sunday, March 12, 2023.Attention all students! Student Scholarships – Applications Accepted Through March 15This year the IEEE Vancouver Section will award up to four $2,000 scholarships to students who best meet the objectives of the Scholarship Awards in 2023, bringing the total available awards to $8,000. All applicants should submit their application using the 2023 Scholarship Application form. The deadline for submission of the applications is Wednesday, March 15 2023 at 11:59 PM. |
IEEE Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering – CCECE 2023, to be held in Regina Sept 24-27, 2023.The CCECE is Canada’s Electrical and Computer Engineering Conference. It is the forum to present new and important contributions in Electrical and Computer Engineering. It is also the opportunity to meet and discuss issues and trends in our programs with fellow faculty members. It can be used as an opportunity to allow your grad students a first taste of the presentation of research results to a broader audience. We anticipate an excellent technical program as well as interesting field trips to Cowessess First Nations Wind, Solar, Battery Storage Facility, Boundary Dam Power Station, Canadian Light Source, SaskTel 5G lab, etc. |

Distinguished Lecture – Dual Particle (Neutron and Gamma) ImagingProf. Sara Pozzi of Michigan University Wednesday, March 8, 11:00 am – 1:00 pm, Online. The Dual-Particle Imager (DPI) is an instrument based on scintillation detectors (liquid organic and sodium iodide) that has been proposed as a device capable of detecting, localizing, and characterizing SNM. The DPI is sensitive to fast neutrons and gamma rays, with the ability to separately reconstruct images and emitted energy spectra for both particle types. Professor Sara Pozzi earned her M.S. and Ph.D. in nuclear engineering at the Polytechnic of Milan, Italy in 1997 and 2001, respectively. She is a Professor in the Department of Nuclear and Radiological Sciences at the University of Michigan where she established and is the leader of the Detection for Nuclear Nonproliferation Group (DNNG). |
A Data-Driven Approach for Value Analysis of Emerging Grid-Scale Storage TechnologiesDr. Kourosh Malek, Division Head, Institute for Energy and Climate Research, Germany Wednesday, March 8, 6:00 pm – 7:35 pm, Online. As versatile technological solutions, energy storage technologies provide valuable stability and flexibility to the grid by increasing the utilization of renewable-based electricity assets. Storage technologies have the capability to control grid power intermittency or power quality services in generation, transmission, and distribution, as well as on the end-user consumption side. Dr. Kourosh Malek is the division head for artificial intelligence and data analytics at the Institute of Energy and Climate Research: Theory and Computation of Energy Materials (IEK-13), at Forschungszentrum Juelich in Germany. With a primary focus on integrated electrochemical energy technologies, his current research is focused on accelerating the discovery and integration of energy storage materials and components. |

Stratosphere: The Uncharted Frontier in NetworksDr. Halim Yanikomeroglu of Carleton University Tuesday, March 14, 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm, Online. In this talk, a novel wireless infrastructure will be presented which includes a new stratospheric access & computing layer composed of high altitude platform station (HAPS) constellations positioned in the stratosphere in addition to the legacy terrestrial layer and the emerging satellite layer. Dr. Yanikomeroglu is a Fellow of the IEEE with the citation “for contributions to wireless access architectures in cellular networks”, a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC), a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE), and an Expert Panelist of the Council of Canadian Academies (CCA|CAC). He is a Distinguished Speaker for the IEEE Communications Society and the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society on 5G/6G wireless technologies. |

Leila Ashurov is Counsel at TELUS and a member of the intellectual property (IP) legal team. Her practice focuses on all areas of IP. Leila graduated from the University of Ottawa Faculty of Law and is also a registered Canadian Trademark Agent. |
GDSfactory, an Open Source flow for photonics & analog circuit design, verification and validationJoaquin Matres, X Moonshot Factory Friday, March 17, 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm, Online. For efficient design, verification and validation of integrated circuits and components, it is important to have an easy-to-customize workflow. Python has become the standard programming language for machine learning, scientific computing and engineering. Joaquin Matres received his Engineering (2009), M.Sc. (2010) and Ph.D. (2014) degree in Telecommunications from the Universidad Politecnica de Valencia, Spain. During his 6 month internship at Intel Corporation and 2.5 years at Hewlett Packard Labs, he worked on hybrid tunable lasers, wavelength selective switches and microring-based optical transceivers. |

The objective of this forum is to bring together transportation professionals, technology providers, and researchers to leverage our collective expertise and experience to plan for regional transportation improvements. At this forum, federal, provincial, municipal, academic and private sector practitioners will come together with technology providers and industry experts to discuss regional challenges, learn more about emerging technologies, and share knowledge on practical solutions. IEEE SysCon 2023 – Systems Engineering ConferenceOrganizer: IEEE Systems Council Monday – Thursday, April 17 – 20, JW Marriott Parq, 39 Smithe Street, Vancouver. This conference covers a broad range of topics within Systems Engineering and will be of interest to many engineers across various industries and disciplines. The IEEE Systems Council facilitates interactions among communities of interest on system-level problems and applications. System-level thinking is essential in the world today, not only for technical systems but also for society at large. |
Canadian Students at SeaOrganizer: Tuesday/Wednesday, May 9/10. On Tuesday, 9 May, participants will sail aboard the Canadian patrol frigate HMCS Ottawa from Burrard Dry Dock Pier in North Vancouver to HMC Dockyard at CFB Esquimalt near Victoria. While underway, participants will have opportunities to see a modern warship in action, and view spaces such as the bridge, operations room, and various engineering spaces. On Wednesday, 10 May, participants will tour shore facilities at CFB Esquimalt, including the Fleet Maintenance Facility, before heading back to Vancouver via BC Ferries. Participants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents. The number of billets is limited, so please submit your applications to Prof. Michelson no later than noon on Monday, 20 March. |
