Metamaterials and Antennas for Future Transportation systems and Smart Cities
March 27 @ 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm
In the upcoming seminar, the applications of metamaterials and advanced antenna technologies for innovations in transport systems and urban mobility will be explored. Several key areas of research and innovation, which are expected to shape the next generation of smart transportation and communication infrastructures, will be discussed. Discussions will focus on improving road safety by enhancing radar detection capabilities, particularly for vulnerable road users like cyclists and pedestrians, through the development of retroreflective surfaces. Advancements in beamforming and EM-field focussing will also be examined, contributing to improved railway energy harvesting, onboard internet connectivity, and optimized 3D beam shaping for various transport applications. As transport systems evolve, new challenges will be presented by the integration of antennas into smart urban environments and autonomous vehicles. The need for innovative solutions to ensure seamless connectivity and communication in these dynamic settings will be addressed. Furthermore, the role of metasurface-based Radar Cross Section (RCS) manipulation will be highlighted, with a focus on the development of advanced retroreflective metasurfaces designed to enhance object visibility and detection. A significant portion of the presentation will be dedicated to railway communication in tunnel environments, where challenges such as wave propagation, depolarization effects, and antenna miniaturization will be examined. In addition, the potential of cloaking techniques for antenna integration will be explored, demonstrating how metasurfaces can be used to maintain optimal antenna performance when incorporated into complex transportation structures. Throughout the talk, ongoing research and collaborative efforts will be emphasized, reinforcing the critical role that metamaterials are expected to play in shaping future transport systems. These innovations will contribute to safer, more efficient, and highly connected mobility solutions, ultimately paving the way for smarter cities and intelligent transportation networks.
