Monolithic co-integration of electronics and photonics in the same silicon die is expected to enable a new realm of high-performance electro-optical systems, having applications in telecommunications, sensing and data centers. Commercial technologies where photonic devices are integrated into well-established microelectronic technologies exist, with the main drawback of a high cost because of the large area occupation of photonic devices. This presentation reports on the integration of CMOS electronic circuits in a standard Silicon Photonics technology and highlights several possible applications enabled by this low-cost approach.
