2024 Section Election – Final Slate of Candidates Announced

The Vancouver Section is pleased to announce the final slate of candidates in the annual election of officers as follows, in no particular order:

Vancouver Section Scholarship Awards increased

The IEEE Vancouver Section has announced an additional $30,000 in scholarship funding in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the IEEE Canadian Foundation. This increase will allow the Vancouver Section to offer up to four $2,000 scholarships annually. The presentation of this funding was made by Section Chair Jacqueline Nichols to IEEE Canada Foundation President David Whyte. Scholarship applications will open in early 2025.

Chris O’Riley, President and CEO of BC Hydro, oversees B.C.’s largest Crown corporation, providing reliable, affordable, and clean electricity to 5 million customers. With a 34-year career at BC Hydro, he has led operations, capital projects, and risk management for its trading subsidiary, Powerex. Chris is a UBC graduate and a Professional Engineer in electrical engineering.

Serverless computing has gained significant traction in the past few years. In this talk, the speaker will explore the architectural trade-offs in serverless platforms and share insights from their six-year research journey on enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of serverless computing systems.

Mohammad Shahrad is an Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at The University of British Columbia (UBC). His work spans the computing stack, from developing complex distributed software systems and cluster-level schedulers to designing new hardware for cloud workloads. Mohammad’s research has been deployed in production, won the USENIX Community Award, and been featured in the press.

Underwater Magnetic & Electromagnetic Sensors: New Applications and Recent Results from OFG’s iCP and Hypermag Systems for Marine Robotic Platforms

The Canadian Atlantic, Vancouver, and Victoria Chapters of the Oceanic Engineering Society are hosting an online session on underwater magnetic and electromagnetic sensors. The session will introduce OFG’s Hypermag, a next-gen magnetometer for marine robotics used in UXO, MCM, and cable mapping with AUVs and ROVs, as well as the iCP system for non-contact Cathodic Protection inspection of subsea structures. Recent trial results will also be presented.
