AGM and Gala 2023 – Successful Return to In-person Events

The IEEE Vancouver Section Annual General Meeting and Gala event was held on March 25. More than 100 attendees joined us for our return to the in-person event. It was a full evening, including an address from IEEE Canada President Rob Anderson, section volunteer awards, scholarship award announcements, and a keynote address from Shivam Kishore of the United Nations.

Student Scholarship Award Winners Announced

The scholarship recipients were announced during the Vancouver Section AGM and Gala, by Section Chair Jacqueline Nichols on behalf of the Vancouver Section Scholarship Committee.

Section Award Winners Named

Local IEEE activities within the Vancouver Section are not possible without the dedicated volunteers who organize many activities for our members. From social events to technical talks, these activities require effort to plan and execute and deliver value to local IEEE members. The Section Chair, Jacqueline Nichols was pleased to announce the winners of section awards for their contributions during 2022.

Student Poster Competition Winners Announced

A student poster competition was held at the Vancouver Section’s AGM & Gala on March 25th. Students from UBC, BCIT, and KPU presented their posters and hardware demos to the panel of judges, and to the general audience consisting of AGM attendees.

Vancouver Life Members AG wins Ron Potts Award

In 2022 IEEE Canada introduced an award for the best Life Member Affinity Group (LMAG) of the year, equivalent to the Affinity Group awards for Women In Engineering and Young Professionals. It is named after the first chair of the Canada Life Members Committee, the “Ron Potts Award”.

This year, the Vancouver Section LMAG was awarded the Ron Potts Award at the Spring Board Meeting in Toronto, Ontario. Section Chair Jacqueline Nichols accepted the award on behalf of Carl Zanon, the Vancouver Section LMAG Chair.

IEEE 802.11be/Extremely High Throughput (EHT)

IEEE 802.11be, which is also known as Wi-Fi 7, is the next amendment to the IEEE 802.11 standard for wireless local area networks (WLAN). This amendment is anticipated to greatly enhance the performance of indoor and outdoor WLAN operations at both stationary and pedestrian speeds in the 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz frequency bands.

Laurent Cariou earned his Ph.D. in electronics from the National Institute of Applied Sciences in Rennes, France in 2003 and 2006, respectively. He has spent over a decade working in IEEE 802.11 and currently serves as Intel’s principal engineer and technical lead for mainstream Wi-Fi in 802.11.

This program was designed by the IEEE Seattle EMC Chapter and the Antenna Measurement Techniques Association (AMTA) to bring the latest inspired technology to the Pacific Northwest on Antenna Design as well as Antenna, 5G, EMC, and Wireless Test and Measurement Techniques for industry applications.  Invited experts in industry, government, and academia will share practical information on various topics in an extended presentation format.

Vancouver TALK 15: Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953 – Reflections of a Life Member

Saturday, April 15, 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, Online.

In June 1953 our speaker attended the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, representing the Province of BC as a member of a contingent of 12 Sea Cadets. The 16-year-old cadets sailed from Halifax on the aircraft carrier HMCS Magnificent. The presentation will feature images and a video with Sea Cadet Zanon on Coronation Day in London; and the Naval Review at Portsmouth on the aircraft carrier HMCS Magnificent.

Carl’s experience as a Sea Cadet led him to join the University Naval Training Division while studying Electrical Engineering at UBC. He was commissioned as a sub-lieutenant in 1958. Carl graduated from UBC’s EE class in 1959. After graduation, Carl’s career encompassed a number of engineering positions in electrical engineering, consulting, and senior management.

IEEE SysCon 2023 – Systems Engineering Conference

This conference covers a broad range of topics within Systems Engineering and will be of interest to many engineers across various industries and disciplines. The IEEE Systems Council facilitates interactions among communities of interest on system-level problems and applications. System-level thinking is essential in the world today, not only for technical systems but also for society at large.
