Summer Social Event August 26, 2023 – Save the date! The Vancouver section will be holding a summer social event, a fun family-oriented picnic-style event for our members, guests, and friends of the section. Last year’s summer social event was a big success, and we are planning to have an even bigger and better event this year! To plan the right amount of food and beverages, we are asking members to register early. Registration is free for members, and $10 for non-members. Please register now to stay informed as the details of the event come together. And save the date! |
IEEE Day October 3, 2023 – Save the date!IEEE Day is a global day of celebration for IEEE. Each year the Vancouver Section organizes a local celebration. We bring together our IEEE members, guests and friends of the section for a special occasion, which includes networking, a special guest speaker, refreshments, and a visit to the Vancouver Section Centennial Monument! For more information about IEEE Day activities around the world, visit |
CIT Summer SeriesThis summer, there is an opportunity to engage with the Computer Society on a regional level, as there will be several exciting seminars. These would also count toward your Professional Development hours, so please register. |
Upcoming Events
Travelling Inside a ChipRicardo Reis of Instituto de Informática, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul Organizer:
An important way to understand the operation of computer and electronic circuits and systems is to analyze how these circuits and systems are implemented. We will take a tour inside various chips, showing solutions from the physical level to the system level, solutions observed through reverse engineering of microprocessors, such as the Z8000, that are not described in the literature. Ricardo Reis received a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Porto Alegre, Brazil, in 1978, and a Ph.D. degree in Microelectronics from the National Polytechnic Institute of Grenoble (INPG), France, in 1983. Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Montpellier in 2016. He is a full professor at the Informatics Institute of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. |
Applications of a Quantum-Dash Mode-Locked Laser in Microwave PhotonicsYuxuan Xie of McGill University Organizer:
Microwave photonics (MWP) is a typical optical signal processing application for optical communications, antenna systems, and 5G/6G networks. At the same time, optical frequency combs (OFC) and programmable optical filters enable this system to be reconfigurable. There are several approaches to creating OFC lines, such as the micro-ring resonator, cascaded electro-optic modulator, and mode-locked laser (MLL), in which the quantum dash (QDash) MLL is an ideal on-chip OFC source to provide low relative intensity noise (RIN), narrow linewidth, and a flat comb spectrum. Yuxuan Xie is currently a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at McGill University, where he is supervised by Professor Lawrence R Chen. His research interests are microwave photonics, optical communications systems, silicon photonics, and digital signal processing. |
