“Trust and Privacy of Social Networks” and IEEE Day Oct 6th

Trust and Privacy Vulnerabilities of Today’s Online Social Networks Lecture and Celebration of IEEE Day to be held on October 6. The Vancouver Section invites members, guests, and friends to a special double event. IEEE CS Distinguished Visitor, Dr. Yuhong Liu, will present a lecture titled, “Trust and Privacy Vulnerabilities of Today’s Online Social Networks.” In addition, the IEEE Vancouver Section will celebrate IEEE Day, marking the 140th anniversary of IEEE and the 113th anniversary of the Vancouver Section. This year’s theme is ‘Leveraging Technology for a Better Tomorrow.’ Members and friends are encouraged to join the celebration and reflect on IEEE’s contributions to a better future.

IEEE Day Celebration and IEEE Computer Society Distinguished Speaker: Trust and Privacy Vulnerabilities of Today’s Online Social Networks

Join us on October 6th to celebrate IEEE Day and welcome Distinguished Speaker Dr. Yuhong Liu from the IEEE Computer Society. The event will be held at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Richmond Campus, and will start at 4 PM. Dr. Liu will discuss privacy and security challenges as part of her speaking tour across Western Canada. This celebration will also include a cake-cutting ceremony and appetizers. The event is free, but registration is required.

Yuhong Liu, Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Santa Clara University, received her Ph.D. degree from the University of Rhode Island in 2012. She is the recipient of the 2019 Researcher of the Year Award at the School of Engineering, Santa Clara University, and the 2013 University of Rhode Island Graduate School Excellence in Doctoral Research Award. Her research interests include trustworthy computing and cybersecurity of emerging applications, such as online social media, the Internet of Things, and blockchain. She has published over 90 papers in prestigious journals and peer-reviewed conferences.

The talk titled “Grid Modernization: Technological Advancements Beyond Smart Grid” will outline a future vision for grid modernization, emphasizing technologies that advance beyond conventional Smart Grid concepts. Key discussion points will include industry trends, integration of microgrids, distributed generation, Advanced Distribution Management Systems, and holistic solutions. The presentation will also address feeder automation, data management strategies, analytics, Smart Grid standards, interoperability, and lessons learned from previous deployments.

John D. McDonald, Professional Engineer, is the Founder & CEO of JDM Associates. He has 50 years of experience in the electric utility transmission and distribution industry. John is a Life Fellow of IEEE and a member of the National Academy of Engineering. He has published one hundred fifty papers and articles, co-authored five books, and holds one US patent.
