Vancouver Section Elections Underway

The Vancouver Section Election Committee has approved the slate of candidates for the IEEE Vancouver Section annual election. All Vancouver Section elected officers will serve for a term of one year, beginning on January 1, 2024. Candidates for these Section Officer positions must be active IEEE members of the Vancouver Section and of Graduate Student Member, Member, Senior Member, Life Member, or Fellow grade. Any eligible Vancouver Section member may also run for election by being nominated as a petition candidate.

B.C. Teams Impress in IEEExtreme Programming Competition

UBC Team “codeSysInc” was ranked first in Region 7. The 17th edition of the annual IEEExtreme programming competition was held on Oct. 28th, 2023. IEEEXtreme is a worldwide computer coding competition open exclusively to IEEE Student Members. Nearly 17,000 IEEE Students registered this year, which represents a 16% growth over last year’s record-setting registration. This represents over 12% of the total IEEE Student Membership!

New IEEE Student Branch Formed at NYIT Vancouver

The IEEE Vancouver Section is happy to welcome the NYIT Vancouver IEEE Student Branch, which was officially formed on July 27th, 2023. To celebrate the formation of the new IEEE Student Branch, and to welcome the new IEEE student members, a networking event and the November Executive Committee Meeting was held at NYIT on Thursday, November 9th.

InAs/InP Quantum-Dash Mode-Locked Laser For Duplex Radio Over Fiber Links

An InAs/InP quantum-dash mode-locked laser (QD-MLL) with phase-locked comb lines is an excellent optical source and a microwave source for, respectively, optical and wireless transmission. In this talk, a duplex radio over fiber (RoF) link using a QD-MLL for RoF transmission is reported.

Jianping Yao is a Distinguished University Professor and University Research Chair in Microwave Photonics in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, University of Ottawa, Canada. He was Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Photonics Technology Letters (2017-2021), an elected member of the Board of Governors of the IEEE Photonics Society (2018-2021), and a past chair of the International Steering Committee for Microwave Photonics (2019-2020).

Disaster Management Up Close and Personal; West Kelowna Wildfire 2023

The McDougall Creek Wildfire was a wildfire in the Central Okanagan region of British Columbia that started 10 kilometers north of the City of West Kelowna on Tuesday, August 15, 2023. As a North wind drove the fire across a mountain towards West Kelowna, firefighters were rapidly deployed to contain the fire while local communities were put on an evacuation alert.

Carl graduated from UBC’s EE class, 1959. He was a student member of the AIEE/IRE, 1957 and a member of IEEE member 1963. He has an extensive background in electrical engineering, consulting, and senior management. Over the course of his career, Carl held positions in five provinces and worked abroad, 11 years in the State of Massachusetts.
